What to expect and how we work together

Therapy for Children, Young People and Adults

Table Of Contents

This page explains how therapy works, what you can expect, and what we ask from you and your parent or carer. It is written to be clear and easy to understand. We follow the rules for psychologists set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Psychological Society (BPS).

About Our Therapy

We provide psychological support for children, young people, and adults. This may include:

  • Talking therapy (where you talk about your thoughts, feelings, and worries)
  • Assessments or reports if agreed

We offer a free 20-minute call for you or your parent/carer to ask questions and see if therapy feels right.

Therapy is a team effort – you or your parent/carer (if appropriate), and your therapist all work together.

We will do our best to support you.

Starting Therapy

Therapy starts once we agree a time for your sessions.

By starting therapy, you are agreeing to these terms.

Your parent or carer may also be involved in agreeing to therapy, depending on your age and needs.

Your Role

To get the most from therapy, you can:

  • Try to tell the truth about what you feel and think
  • Come to sessions on time
  • Let us know if you cannot make a session
  • Tell us if anything makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable

Your parent/carer may be asked to give consent if we need to share information with other people, like your school or doctor.

Appointments and Cancellations

If you need to cancel, please tell us at least 48 hours (2 days) before your session.

If we do not get enough notice, you may need to pay for the session.

We understand that emergencies happen and will try to be flexible.

Fees

Your parent/carer will agree to the cost before therapy starts.

Invoices should be paid within 7 days unless we agree otherwise.

We will give notice if fees change.

Confidentiality (Keeping Things Private)

What you say in therapy stays private, unless:

  • You say it’s okay to share
  • We have to share by law (for example, if someone is at serious risk of harm)

We will always try to talk to you about sharing information first.

Your Records

We keep notes about your therapy safely and only share them with professionals if needed.

You have the right to see your records, but sometimes some information may be restricted if seeing it could hurt you.

Reports and Written Materials

Any reports or letters we write belong to Family Focused, but you can use them personally once fees are paid.

We will only share reports with other people if you (and your parent/carer, if needed) agree or if the law requires it.

Where Assessments or Therapy Take Place

We are able to provide assessments and therapy via video conferencing or in person.

In Person

We offer face to face counselling and therapy sessions at our Nottingham clinics. These sessions provide a quiet, private setting where you can meet with your therapist in person and talk through the issues that have brought you to therapy.

Some people prefer meeting in person as it allows a more direct connection and a calm space away from everyday distractions. Our clinics are welcoming, comfortable spaces designed to help you feel comfortable during your session.

We currently offer appointments at two locations in Nottingham:

Humber Therapy Centre
132a Queens Road East
Beeston, Nottingham
NG9 2FD

Magnolia Therapy Centre
354 Mansfield Road
Nottingham
NG5 2EF

Video Conference Sessions

We can offer sessions by video conference. This allows you to speak with your counsellor from the comfort of your own space while still having a private, supportive conversation.

A video conference session is a live meeting using audio and video, allowing people in different locations to connect face to face online. It can also include features such as screen sharing and chat when needed.

To find out more about how these sessions work, please view our page below.

Ending Therapy

You can stop therapy at any time. We usually like to plan this together so it feels safe.

We may stop therapy if:

  • Fees are unpaid
  • Therapy is no longer helpful or safe
  • Professional or legal reasons mean we cannot continue

Any unpaid fees must still be paid.

Safety and Limits

We work in a safe, professional way at all times.

We are not responsible for things outside our control, like weather or illness.

We are also not responsible for indirect problems that might happen outside therapy, but we do have legal responsibility if you are harmed through negligence.

Complaints

If something worries you, please tell your therapist.

If you cannot or do not want to talk to your therapist, you or your parent/carer can contact: Sean Crossley, The Company Director
