This is a holistic approach that combines various therapeutic techniques and theories to create a personalised treatment plan for an individual.
Instead of relying on a single method, an integrative therapist draws from multiple schools of thought, such as cognitive behaviour therapy and psychodynamic therapy, to tailor a flexible approach that addresses the client's unique needs, considering their mental, emotional, physical, and social experiences. This approach emphasizes the relationship between the client and therapist and aims to treat the whole person by integrating different aspects of their life into the therapy process.
Integrative psychotherapists are therefore able to tailor their approach to the client’s needs. They do this in a variety of different ways, either through drawing on the theoretical basis of the different theories or through being guided by evidence based practice on which techniques have worked best for others in the past.
Integrative psychotherapists also consider the core ingredient in common with the different therapies, working on the principle that these are the key factors that make psychotherapy successful.
Others will have a firm grounding in one particular theory and therapeutic approach which forms the foundation for their work and then include ideas and strategies from other theories into their work.
