Therapeutic Approach

NVR - Non-Violent Resistance

NVR is a highly effective, innovative form of Systemic Family Therapy, which has been developed to respond effectively to aggressive, violent, controlling and self-destructive behaviour in young people.

There are often factors already identified as to why a young person may present in this way, including diagnoses and a history of abuse. The violence often results in the young person controlling others around them and makes it very difficult for parents to remain caring in their responding.

It is important to directly address such behaviour. NVR provides a specific careful and supportive way of doing this. NVR helps parents to feel empowered and stronger, helping parents to acquire a position of strength, through raising parental presence and not giving in to unreasonable or harmful demands by the young person.

NVR helps parents to deescalate situations and protect themselves from aggression and violence, to control an uncontrollable and often out of control child. Therapy will facilitate parents to identify their strengths and abilities.

The NVR approach enables parents to focus on the child’s needs rather than the angry façade.

NVR is increasingly being used to help young people with anxiety problems, obsessive compulsive behaviour, school refusal, addictions including internet addiction, eating disorders, gang involvement, and domestic violence. NVR is also found to be effective with hard to reach young people (Lebowitz & Omer, 2013).

Approximately 30% of children and young people with avoidant problems do not engage sufficiently or cooperate in therapy. This group is especially at risk of serious self-harm over their life span; by working with the family environment and developing a support network around the family, it becomes possible to help these young people, even if they do not physically engage themselves.

NVR is a systemic approach that considers all persons within the family system including siblings. Siblings are also supported through increased understanding of what the parents are doing as well as to find ways in which they can communicate with their parents about any difficulties they may be experiencing. This then becomes the siblings’ own form of resistance and empowerment.
